Runner's Six-Pack: Part Two

This is the second part of "The Runner's Six-Pack". In this video, you'll learn three functional exercises that will build core muscle strength and running power. Although this series mainly caters to runners, I believe rowers can find a use for it too. After all, core muscles are an integral part of strength in any sport. Video after the jump.

Runner's Six-Pack: Part One

Running magazine, runnersworld.com features Runner's Six-Pack, a two part video series on building abdominal muscles. Part one, 'Moves to Get Ripped', shows three simple exercises meant to build abdominal strength a.k.a gaining a ripped six-pack. Shown in the video are the floor crunch, the bicycle crunch and the captain's chair crunch. The exercises are pretty simple and do not require any extra equipment other than a simple chair. FYI, weak core muscles (abdominal muscles) are the cause of that 'vomiting' feeling after a heavy erg session. Hit the six-pack image for the link.

Intro: Surf Rowing

Surf Rowing = Coastal Rowing? Actually surf rowing differs from coastal rowing. The key difference being surf rowing is flagged off in knee deep rolling surf i.e. the beach, whereas coastal rowing events start off in calmer waters. Another dissimilarity is an experienced helmsman or 'sweep', a vital member of the crew. The helmsman/sweep (similar to flat water coxswain) steers the boat with a large paddle, much like a dragon boat helmsman. The sweep may be seated or standing according to personal preference and surf condition (as you will see in the video), where else in coastal rowing the cox is seated at all times like in ordinary flat water rowing (the kind we do). So when is URC taking to the high seas? The video after the jump was put together by UK Surf Rowers League (UKSRL). Hit "Read more" to catch the video.

Learn To Row Right

I stumbled upon a PDF document on common mistakes by rowers. I've found at least 3 of my own mistakes here. Here's an excerpt:

IMPROPER POSTURE
Many oarsmen row with improper posture in the boat. Most
commonly, the error comes in rounding the back, which
causes the shoulders to rise, the chest to sag, and the lower
back to slump.

Greetings

Hi everyone,

Visha here and I'll be one of the new admins for the blog. The other is Fatehah I believe. Will do my best to get things up ad running again, although I'm quite new to blogging. Before I begin, i would like to congratulate the new Board Members on their postings (I'll put up the list ASAP). The first thing I've done is remove the broken video links. Next, I'm putting up a poll to ask your opinion on changing the blog's address to unitenrowing.blogspot.com. Personally, I find the current one too long. There are other technical reasons for this which I do not want to discuss right now. So, please vote in the Poll above the chat box.

Till the next post,
Visha

UPDATE: The powers that be have stipulated that the address shall remain. The technical issue part involves Google services that I've been wanting to incorporate in the blog (Calendar, Picasa etc.). Worked around those. I've already dismantled the poll box.

UPDATE #2: Brand new blog theme. Hope it goes down well. Still a few minor kinks to iron out. Other than that, this looks like a good start. Unless ada yang tak puas dengan theme baru. Hehehe.

Dinner With Shiga University (Japan) Rowers

Tonight UNITEN rowers had dinner with SHIGA UNIVERSITY rowers at D'Tasik Restaurant. We all had a very nice dinner although at first everyone looked so shy to talk to each other. We all ate Tom Yam, Chicken Soup, and also Sate which was prepared by UNITEN rowers for SHIGA University rowers.

Everyone was so happy and always talk about Japanese culture, both Malay and Japanese languages and even talking about experiences in rowing. At one time all of us sang Kiroro Miraie song together accompanied by Samboria band from D'Tasik Restaurant.

At the end of the dinner, Shiga rowers gave souvenir and origami to each of UNITEN rowers and UNITEN rowers gave T-shirt and even Malaysian currency in return.

Finally we all had a photography session together and the dinner ended with happiness and joyful.

UNITEN Rowing Invitational 2008

Uniten Rowing Invitational is about to begin in a few hours from now. There are a lot of participants from various local universities such as UTM, MMU, USIM, UTHM, UM and Uniten. Not to mention, there are also participation from universities outside Malaysia such as from Phillipines and Hong Kong. The passion of rowing can be felt now among the athletes or in other word called ROWERS.

Hopefully, in the year 2008 we can bring the trophy back to Uniten because Uniten have organized this event for about 3 years and Uniten never brought back the trophy since lost to UTM all those days. So hopefully, we can increase our spirit and enthusiasm to beat every single universities. NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE!

Any updates will be informed here in this blog for these coming three days since URI will be started from 7 August to 10 August.

GOOD LUCK TO US ALL!!

Centralized Training 2008 -Final day report-

Today is the last day of the Uniten Rowing Club centralized training. Since the training started on last Monday(7/4/08) until today, everything went well and organized. The numbers of participants also not bad with around 35 participants, the total numbers of senior rowers and junior rowers, successfully finished the training.

Before the centralized training ended this evening, all of the particpants ate at the Kelab Tasik Putrajaya restaurant and thanks to Wani's father because all of the meal were on her father. Then after that, coach Ibrahim had a couple of things to say before he officially ended the centralized training. He said he is very satisfied with this centralized training compared to the previous one last year. For him, this centralized training was the most succesful training so far since the establishment of Uniten Rowing Club 3 years ago. Everyone gave good cooperation, enthusiasm and work as a team to went through the centralized training.

We will be having our next training in few weeks time or maybe the training will be started 3 weeks before MASUM. Therefore I hope every Uniten rowers can maintain or perhaps can even increase their fitness level. So that later it will be easy for our coach to select the best rowers to represent Uniten in Rowing competition in MASUM 2008.

All the best and happy holiday!!

On last friday (11 April 2008), the coach had given all of the centralized training participants an off training day. In the morning of the day, all participants were needed to attend a fitness test which was involving 7 level test, bridging and 2.4 km run within 12 minutes conducted by the Sports Unit of Uniten(USK).

Right after friday prayer, all of the team members gathered at MPH around 3 pm and went to Aktif Futsal in Bangi for a futsal session between members. The futsal session ended at 5 pm. At night there was another activity which was planned earlier by Saifullah and the gang. The activity was watching movie entitle Street King at GSC, Alamanda. All of the participants also had dinner at the Alamanda Food Court before watching the movie.

Everything ended with happiness among the members =)

Centralized Training

7th April 2008 will be the first training day for Uniten rowers as a preparation for 2008 MASUM Competition. This centralized training will be held for about one week. Uniten Rowing Club coach, Mr Ibrahim says that this centralized training will be focusing on technique rather than fitness. Because he says that to improve fitness level within one week is ridiculous, therefore we should spend this one week by focusing on row technique so that all rowers can improve their rowing skills. He also said that, he has mentioned long ago to all rowers to improve their fitness level and now they can just maintain it. So there should not be a problem with fitness level.

This centralized training will be started with cooper test which is handled by Unit Sukan (USK) Uniten. Another cooper test will be held at the end of the centralized training. This test is to check the fitness level of all rowers. All technique training will be organized at the same place as ever which is at Tasik Putrajaya.

Lastly, I'd like to wish good luck to every rowers which are participating in this centralized training and try to give your best shot. This might be your last competition before u graduate, so all the best. Try to get as many medals as we can and hopefully we can increase the number of gold medals this time.

Enjoy your training,

best regards

Muazan Mohsin

The first day of rowing clinic which was on Saturday was held in COIT. For the first day, the module were to expose and explain to all participants what is rowing all about. How does it work, the history of Uniten Rowing Club, all the achievements by the club, the differences between rowing, kayaking and canoeing and etc. In the evening on the same day, ergometer session was organized so that the participants can feel how is the feeling during pulling the ergometer. They did a great job. Some of the participants did very well.

Coach Ibrahim do the talking

The next day of the event was the day that every participants including crew of Uniten Rowing Clinic were waiting for. The whole day on this day was performed at Kelab Tasik Putrajaya. All of the participants were very excited to try rowing. After they have spent one full day of learning on what is rowing all about, now its the time to show their skills. Untill the end of the event, obviously, we can see the satisfaction on each of the participants face. They were really really enjoying the event and thats what we were hoping as the organizer.

World Rowing Junior Championships

History
The first FISA Junior Regatta for men was held in 1967 and women were included eight years later following on the heels of women’s rowing being added to the Olympic Games in 1976.

General Description
Traditionally just under 50 nations take part in the championships with over 600 juniors competing at the 2005 World Rowing Junior Championships.
There’s no doubt the Junior Champs are exciting. There is a spirit of youthful exuberance that cannot be faked. It’s the unrestrained display of joy as athletes win their races. It’s also the absolute devastation on the faces and words from the mouths of those who lose. It’s the family that travels - sometimes thousands of miles – to unite behind their siblings. It’s the tears shed by joyous coaches. It’s the absolute determination by parents to make sure they see it all.

The World Rowing Junior Championships see the launch of a number of future stars. It’s the biggest regatta for juniors and most of the competitors row internationally for the first time. Junior rowing is boosted by the “one Euro per seat” collected at each FISA World Rowing Masters Regatta, which helps to run junior development programmes.

Basic Rowing Technique

It is important to realise that the rowing stroke is one continuous movement, with no pausing or stopping. It is possible to break it into four main parts, however:

  1. Drive (power phase) – when the blades are in the water, and power is applied to push the boat along.
  2. Finish (extraction) – getting the blade out of the water.
  3. Recovery – moving back up the slide, getting ready for the next stroke.
  4. Catch – dropping the blade in the water so power can be applied again.
